Internet Connections guide
Here is a quick guide for finding an internet connection that is going to do the job for your hosted campaginer system
If you do go hunting around for different options here's the key points.
- The biggest thing people will try and sell you on is download speeds, that's great but in pretty much every case you will get far more than you will need for voice calls. The bit you need to find out about is about the upload speed. Generally this is where the speeds are typically much slower and cause grief with call quality.
- So what you are looking out for is a SHDSL or EFM service, they will have the same bandwidth up and down. The size of the connection depends on how many agents you have and what you are realistically going to grow to. Each uncompressed call is about 100kbps. So for 5 agents you need 500kbps or 0.5Mbps for 10 agents you will want 1Mbps.
- The other critical thing you need to find out is a thing called "Contention Ratio" what this means is the number of other businesses that are sharing your link from the exchange to the rest of the world.
For example you buy a 2/2Mb connection and from your office to the exchange you get the full 2Mbps. But then the ITSP may have oversold from the exchange. For example it might be a 4:1 contention ratio, which means that 4 other businesses are trying to use the same 2Mb at the same time from the exchange to the outside world so you might only get 0.5Mb which will potentially wreck all your calls.
